Mentors All Around You

Updated: Oct 13

It's true. They might not be offering pay; you might have to apprentice with them for free even... but mentors are all around you. They are all around me.

Needing help can sometimes feel a bit awful, like "Why can't I do this on my own?!" (I myself am very independently driven). But putting yourself in a state of humility, open to learning from those who know more from you, is crucial.

When Diego and I were driving up to Bellingham from San Luis Obispo (we took six incredible days, camping along the way) I asked him at some point why he thought he turned out the way he did. He said his mentors had a great deal to do with it. One was Mark Roberts, Diego's piano teacher for many years. I taught with Mark Roberts at Cal Poly in the English department; at one point the lecturers decided to honor Mark and we made bracelets that read WWMRD? What Would Mark Roberts Do? He's a stellar person, and he guided, taught, and mentored Diego and is one of the reasons Diego is thriving now.

Who has been your greatest mentor?
